So close to being great, even Jack Clayton’s half-hearted direction can’t quite put a dampener on such solid source material. The book was clearly an influence on Stephen King’s It, and that’s kind of what the film ends up feeling like: a lesser Stephen King adaptation. Maybe below Christine but above the made-for-tv version of The Shining. I just wish the film had been a little more focused in who it’s targeting. It’s a Disney film and aimed towards a younger audience, but the central theme is of old age and regret? Okay!

Still though, Jonathan Pryce is mesmerising and sexy as fuck.
